DAY 1 – Cape Town
The tour starts in Cape Town, with a tour of the mother city of South Africa. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty offers a diversity of experiences for even the worldly traveler. In Cape Town there is something for everyone to enjoy. Weather permitting, we will visit Table Mountain.
DAY 2 – Cape Town
We vist Robben Island. Visit the prison in which Nelson Mandela spent 19 of his 27 years of imprisonment. Now a World Heritage Site.
DAY 3 – Cape Town
We take a tour of the Peninsula. Enjoy the stunning views of the Atlantic Seaboard. Visit Boulders Penguin Colony. This is one of only three land-based colonies in the world. Continue on towards Cape Point. Enter the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and drive through unique scenery towards Cape Point, the most South-western tip of Africa.
Day 4 : Cape Town to Montagu
Depart for the Paarl Valley/ Franshhoek Region for your visit to Drakenstein prison. This is the prison that Nelson Mandela was released from. Continue our journey to Montagu/Barrydale region.
Day 5 : Montagu to Oudtshoorn
Today we will learn about the Cango Caves, ostrich farming and the Wildlife Ranch. We will learn all about the Oudtshoorn area. We enjoy our eveing stay in Oudtshoorn
Day 6 : Oudtshoorn to Tsitsikamma
Today we leave behind the semi-arid desert of the Little Karoo and travel through the majestic Outeniqua Mountains and into the lush green scenery of Garden Route. We will drive through the beautiful towns of Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Our first stop is a visit to Monkeyland, the only free-roaming, multi-species primate sanctuary in the world. We also visit its sister sanctuary, the Birds of Eden which is the largest free-flight aviary in the world
Day 7 : Tsitsikamma to Addo
After arriving at Addo Elephant National Park we will explore the environment to see what wild animals Addo has to offer.
Day 8 : Addo to Qunu
Transfer to Qunu, home to Nelson Mandela.
Day 9 : Qunu
We will do a village tour where Mandela grew up, where Mandela was baptize and a visit to his parents grave-site. Visiting the museum, visit the sliding stone and the first school he attended.
Day 10: Mthatha to Howick
Transfer Howick, to visit the Capture Site where Mandela was arrested on the 5 August 1962
Day 11: Durban – Valley of a Thousand Hills
Enjoy a 1/2 day tour to Valley of a Thousand Hills. Named for its many hills and cliffs and valleys; the region has been home to the Zulu people for centuries. This region beautifully displays the authentic living environment of the rural Zulu people. Visit the site where Nelson Mandela carts his first democratic vote.
Day 12: Howick to Johannesburg
Continue the long road to Johannesburg. We will have lunch at Lillieleaf farm, in Rivonia
We will take a tour of Lilliesleaf. It is on this site that all the evidence was found that put Nelson Mandela and his comrades in prison for life.
Day 13: Johannesburg
We drive pass Mandela’s first house in Alexandra, 46 Seventh Avenue (when he first came to Johannesburg as a young man) and his current house in Houghton. We visit Constitution Hill, where Mandela was imprisoned before the Rivonia Trial happened. We will tour the Apartheid Museum that tells the story of those epic apartheid years, through film footage, photographs, text panels and artifacts illustrating the events and human stories of apartheid
Day 14: Johannesburg
Transfer to Soweto, the largest black township in South Africa. Today we visit the Mandela Family House Museum and drive pass Winnie’s current House. We visit the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication (where Freedom Charter was drawn) and a possible visit to the Mandela Children Foundation or children’s Hospital.
Day 15: Johannesburg
Transfer to Pretoria, the Administrative Capital of South Africa. Here, we will visit the Union Building and Voortrekker Monument. We enjoy a tour at Freedom Park
We transfer to Oliver Tambo International Airport, for your flight home
